2023's Club Meetings:

Completed Meetings

Wednesday, March 1, 2023 at 7:00 p.m.
Program: "19th Century Gardens in Pennsylvania Dutch Country"

Speaker: Michael Cassidy
Michael Cassidy, a master gardener with Penn State Extension will present "19th Century Gardens in Pennsylvania Dutch Country"  which is specific to our area.

The May, June, July and September 2023 club meetings were for club members only and by invitation.

Wednesday, April 12, 2023 at 7:00 p.m.
Program: “Herbicides in Conventional Farming”
Speaker: Andrew Lefever
Andrew Lefever is a T&CGCL former scholarship winner now an Agriculture professor at Penn State. This controversial topic will include a presentation on why conventional farming requires the use of glyphosate (Roundup) herbicide to maintain no-till cropping systems for soil conservation. This is one of the greatest tradeoffs in modern agriculture in our region. In other words, at one time, farmers plowed to control weeds.  Now they primarily rely on herbicides to control weeds.  This has resulted in soil conservation and water quality gains.  However, several weed species have now developed resistance to herbicides, creating additional challenges.

Program: “Community Wildlife Habitat”
Speaker: Linda Ferich of Lancaster Conservancy

Linda Ferich coordinates the Lancaster Conservancy’s Community Wildlife Habitat program, a partnership with National Wildlife Federation. Through this program, Lancaster County has become the first county in Pa to become a certified NWF Community Wildlife Habitat. Linda is a certified Chesapeake Bay Landscape Professional and student of Mt Cuba Center’s Ecological Gardening program. She and a few conservation-minded friends formed the Lancaster Native Plant Alliance, a chapter of Pa Native Plant Society.
Linda’s PowerPoint presentation is about the Lancaster Conservancy’s Community Wildlife Habitat initiative that works with local property owners and organizations. The program encourages the planting of native landscapes that reduce stormwater runoff while providing habitat and food for wildlife and pollinators.
