Program: “Herbicides in Conventional Farming”
Speaker: Andrew Lefever
Andrew Lefever is a T&CGCL former scholarship winner now an Agriculture professor at Penn State. This controversial topic will include a presentation on why conventional farming requires the use of glyphosate (Roundup) herbicide to maintain no-till cropping systems for soil conservation. This is one of the greatest tradeoffs in modern agriculture in our region. In other words, at one time, farmers plowed to control weeds. Now they primarily rely on herbicides to control weeds. This has resulted in soil conservation and water quality gains. However, several weed species have now developed resistance to herbicides, creating additional challenges.
